Day 5 and 6 – Macetown – Roses Hut
Distance day: 10 km
Total distance: 83 km
Profile: Very steep, two big climbs, one small one
High point: 1265
After saying goodbye to the sandfly paradise (not) we continued to our, until now, most difficult section of the route
The route to Macetown consisted of more than 30 crossings of an area river (in flip-flops or barefoot )
This crossing have continued for another two kilometers before going steeply uphill
Logan has, in my opinion, the greater endurance. This was especially noticeable uphill over longer distances. He can sound mountains at a brisk pace, during which I had to stop briefly several times to catch my breath. In the end, though, we both made it to the top
A phenomenon that we quickly got out of the habit of interpreting is to guess where the top of a mountain is. Usually there is another one hiding behind it and often another. This can quickly lead to disappointment, as the exertions do not end as expected
Where you go up, you have to go down. Rose’s Hut was our destination for the day. It is a wonderful little hut near a small stream where you can get fresh water for cooking and drinking. In my case, I also took a refreshing bath right away. One feels like freshly born after a long day afterwards
We spent the night with two Czechs and another Kiwi to play cards and smoke goods
Day 6 – Roses Hut (break day with rain)
Length : 0 km
Profile : sitting and lying
We took advantage of the rainy day to rest a bit. The other New Zealander also decided to stay. The bags moved on in the rain first thing in the morning. Apparently arriving was more important to them than a pleasant hike. During the day a Frenchman came by, but he only stopped for a short break to eat. After an hour he left behind the Czechs. Meanwhile another Canadian came from our direction. Four of us spent the day smoking, playing cards, sleeping and eating sweets. What a pleasant change.
