Day 1 – Roncesvalles
27 km (27 km) 5h
Today I started the first stage from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. I woke up early and started earlier than planned. I passed a few pilgrims and didn’t see them again until I reached my destination. For the predicted 100% rain I was lucky to be spoiled only from the second half of the day with moisture from the sky. However, this made the second half all the worse. Since the hiking trails were impassable because of the persistent rain of the last days, I ran the longer way over the road. Continuous rain for two and a half hours encouraged my clothes to soak up plenty of water down to the bone
1057 meters of elevation gain is nothing special, but it’s cold enough at zero degrees for leftover snow from the day before. Unfortunately, this was not particularly pleasant, but raised the joy of a warm shower all the more. This was the steepest, but not the highest, bit on the whole route
To my disappointment, the hostel in Roncesvalles was still closed for a few hours. Fortunately, I was able to change in an adjacent restaurant and warm up with tortilla and coffee. Here then gradually the other pilgrims, some of whom I had passed before, arrived
The hostel was an old monastery, which can accommodate certainly more than 200 pilgrims. In the old walls it was quite cold and the clothes dried badly. Many, of the other pilgrims, have already thrown here the first time their clothes in the washing machine and dryer
quinze – fifteen
roncar – snore
La primera etapa estaba bien. Eran veinte y siete kilómetros a pie. No tengo ningún dolor. No me duele nada. Lo peor era que llovía la segunda mitad potentemente y me mojé la piel en todo mi cuerpo.
